A PERSONAL NOTE
With two decades in tech and management consulting, I learned everything from coding to client relations, but not once was I taught how to navigate the icky waters of tough conversations.
I had very few leaders who modelled hard conversations with grace and courage. So my experience was that difficult conversations end up with mobile phones being thrown and relationship ruptures.Â
When I started coach training 10 years ago, I stumbled into a skill set I didn’t know I needed in my life. Skills of listening and powerful questions, and also understanding my own inner emotional world. This all laid the groundwork for my growing curiosity that maybe I could have hard conversations. Â
The transformative moment came with my introduction to non-violent communication during team coach training. This approach not only reshaped my personal interactions but also deeply influenced my professional coaching and facilitation. And since then, some of the conversations I’ve been part of – on racial injustice, and homelessness – have changed my life.
This evolution has been slow and steady – and forms a cornerstone of my mission to help us approach difficult conversations as opportunities for growth and understanding.
One conversation at a time
